Some people wonder why plastic surgery is simply called plastic surgery. What does this mean? Why the plastic? Today we will be uncovering the reasoning behind why plastic surgery is called just that. Meaning “to mold or shape” the word “plastic” comes from the Greek word plastikos. Some of the first plastic surgeries were done to close difficult wounds or replace tissue lost due to injury or cancer. These procedures often involved the formation of a skin flap to reshape or mold the defect so as to approximate the original shape.
